PROPOSED PROJECT
The North Dakota Department of Transportation is proposing to rehabilitate a 1.08 mile section of US 281 from 16th Street SW to 29th Street SW in the City of Jamestown, North Dakota.
The proposed project will be reconstructed to a hybrid urban section with curb and gutter on both sides of each roadway. There will be ditches, but to a lesser degree than currently exist. The mainline roadway will be paved with Portland Cement Concrete. In addition:
- The frontage roads will be reconstructed with a hot bituminous surface with curb and gutter on both sides of the roadway.
- The existing lighting, signals and flashing beacon will be replaced in conjunction with the project.
- The portion of the large drainage structure, which is under the highway south of I – 94, will be replaced.
- The I – 94 ramps will be reconstructed to the point where recent highway reconstruction left off.
A signal will be added at the intersection of US 281 and 20 th Street SE

Issues that were resolved after the public hearing..…….. .
- It was decided not to install a pedestrian underpass under US 281 north of I-94.
- It was decided instead to install pedestrian crossing indicators to the signals at 17th Street SW, 20th Street SW and 25th Street SW.
- There will not be a separate surfaced truck detour route that follows the local roads to the Buffalo Mall area.
- The shared use path will extend from 16th Street SW south to 29th Street SW.
- The grade of US 281 will be raised slightly on either side of the structure over I-94 to improve intersection sight distance.
- The radius of the free flow right turn lane at 17th Street SW will be shortened to approximately 200 feet to alleviate some of the traffic conflicts at 16th Street SW.
